Mountain lions live in mountainous areas of the western United States . Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country! Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable . In addition, the lions appear to be moving east . They were even reported in the suburbs ( 郊区 ) of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago .

It seems certain that these “kings of the mountains” are moving . Why? Scientists are not sure . Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area . These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food .

“ The young males are looking for new homes, ” says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento, Calif .“ People tend to create too many barriers ( 障碍 ), such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise . As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources ( 水源 ) , these barriers get in their way .”

The sightings have made people increasingly watchful . Sometimes the “mountain lions” that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats . But at least a few of the meetings have been real . The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion .

Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion, an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats: Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another .

“ To be fair,” says the expert, “mountain lions are trying to regain their homes . They were here first . Now we need to find ways we can live together . ”

Letter to Editor of TV Weekly

Dear Sir/Madam,

I read Alison Burnham's review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her . I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling .

The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood . For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s) . My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket . I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin . The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey . I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything . When school finished for the day, I couldn ' t catch the bus home — I had to walk . As a grown  up, whenever I ' ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I ' m able to take control of the situation .

I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme . Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so  called “ reality programmes ”. I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry .

Yours faithfully,

Chris Daniels

T - shirts out; uniforms in

School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U . S . A . That ' s no surprise, because they offer many benefits . They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling ( 标记 ) that come from clothing . If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes .

Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends . The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down .

As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties . For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol ( 象征 ) of law and order . The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets . People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another . For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education .

Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children ' s “ creativity .” First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality ( 个性 ) . They just copy their classmates . Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like . While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths;this should take up all the creativity they have . Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way .

72 . In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means .

A . tasks B . messages C . differences D . advantages

73 . From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .

A . prevent the wearers from being laughed at

B . help the wearers keep their duties in mind

C . are seen as a symbol of power

D . help to create social barriers

74 . Some people are against school uniforms because .

A . they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms

B . they believe that uniforms will make students less creative

C . they don't agree that uniforms can remove social barriers

D . they think that school uniforms are too popular

75 . The author would probably agree that .

A . it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not

B . students' individuality may not come from school education

C . students' creativity is related to the clothes they choose

D . school uniforms help to create equality among students
